Pull up your business on Google right now. What comes up? For a lot of small businesses, it’s a profile that’s been untouched for a year or more: old hours, a couple of blurry photos from whenever it was first set up, maybe a one-star review sitting there with no response. That listing is your Google Business Profile, and whether you’ve paid it any attention or not, it’s doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to whether new customers find you at all.
It used to be fine to set this up once and move on. Not anymore, and here’s why.
Why GBP Is Having a Moment
Most local searches these days don’t start with someone typing your website into the address bar. They start with “plumber near me” or “best pizza in Plainfield,” and Google answers that with a map and a short list of businesses, not a search results page full of blue links. Someone can look at your hours, check your reviews, tap to call, or get directions without ever landing on your actual website. Your site still matters, but for a lot of customers, your Google profile is the only interaction they ever have with your business before deciding to walk in or pick up the phone.
There’s also a ranking piece to this that catches people off guard. Google pays attention to how active your profile is: whether you’re adding new photos, posting updates, collecting reviews, and responding to them in a reasonable amount of time. Two businesses can have similarly solid websites, but the one that’s kept its profile fresh is often the one Google puts in front of people first.
And then there’s the AI piece, which is moving faster than most business owners realize. Google’s search tools are getting more conversational, more like asking a question and getting a direct recommendation back rather than scrolling through a list yourself. Those answers are being pulled from business profile data. A thin or outdated profile doesn’t just rank lower in this world; it may not get mentioned at all. The businesses showing up in these AI-generated answers tend to be the ones with complete, current information, not just the ones with the flashiest websites.
What This Looks Like Day to Day
None of this takes a marketing degree to fix. It just takes actually paying attention to it, which is easy to let slide when you’re busy running the business itself:
- Make sure your hours and contact info are right (including updates for holidays and seasonal changes)
- Add photos every so often instead of just at setup
- Answer your reviews, even the good ones, with a quick thank you
- Post when you’ve got something worth sharing: a promotion, a new service, a finished project you’re proud of
That last part is where most businesses fall off, not because they don’t care, but because it’s easy to forget about something that isn’t sitting on your desk.
