The Big Idea
I have a strong desire to see teenagers and young adults encouraged and prepared for the lives they are preparing to live. Busy, hardworking parents often have a hard time connecting with their teens simply because of lifestyle differences, but also because of time constraints, priorities, or even disinterest.
I have built technology solutions for years that equip companies to do what they were meant to do. The "big idea" that I am developing now is to do the same with parents - to provide them a useful, cost effective, and "face reality" tool that allows them to encourage and connect with their kids.
The tool I'm building will allow parents to sign up for a "package" of themed text messages to be sent to them and their kids as words of encouragement, conversation starters, or simply a reminder that they care. One package, for example, is a word-of-encouragement-a-week. We'll have a large selection of quotes, bible verses, or encouraging thoughts that they can pick from (or just let us pick the 52 "best"). The system will then send out a weekly text message to the teenager(s).
Other applications of this idea revolve around specific times in lives, such as leaving for college, starting a dating relationship, or going through a hard time. We aren't becoming source of encouragement for these teens, but are providing parents an easy way to connect with them on a level that means something (regular, consistent words of encouragement) using a medium that is culturally relevant (texting).
As a offshoot of this project, and also part of our marketing strategy, we will be offering low cost text-messaging services to groups that have a majority of teenage membership. It is not necessarily proper for a coach, or a teacher, or any type of adult, to simply add a minor to a list of people they text. They may not have permission, or worse yet, something inappropriate could be communicated without a parent's acknowledgement.
This secondary system will be a way for groups to request permission from parents to text their children. Parents will then be in "control" of the adults texting their minors and also be able to review / participate in the conversations their teens are having.
How will it Help?
We have a heart for the teenagers in our schools and churches. We envision this product being used by busy, hardworking parents who still have a desire to connect with their teens in a relevant and consistent manner. Whether these are business owners or families simply working hard to make ends meet, it is our priority to encourage and equip families, and we believe this product will do just that in a very personal and affordable manner.
We also envision groups whose members are made up of teenagers to get great use out of this product. We see applications for travelling / school sports teams, church youth groups, school organizations, and any other type of groups that may be led by adults but want to stay in touch with teenage (minor) group members. The ability to monitor and review who is texting their children adds a layer of safety to the texting relationship and will also provide a gateway to bring parents and children into more consistent, encouraging relationship through the texting system we offer.
